Alexander Whitley is an award-winning choreographer whose groundbreaking work with digital technology has placed him at the forefront of innovation in contemporary dance. His multidisciplinary practice, which focuses on the use of motion tracking and interactive technology, spans stage, installation, film, and immersive platforms.
Since founding the Alexander Whitley Dance Company in 2014, his productions—developed in collaboration with studios such as Marshmallow Laser Feast, The Guardian VR, and HTC Vive Arts—have been presented in theatres across the UK and internationally, and showcased at events including the London Film Festival, SXSW, Mediale, and Romaeuropa.
Alexander has been affiliated with and a partner of some of the UK’s most prestigious dance institutions, including Sadler’s Wells Theatre, The Royal Ballet, and Rambert, and has created works for many of the country’s leading companies. He is a founding member of the New Movement Collective and a lecturer on the MA Design for Performance and Interaction program at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.
Trained at The Royal Ballet School, Alexander began his career with the Birmingham Royal Ballet before transitioning to contemporary dance, gaining extensive experience and working with companies such as Rambert, Michael Clark Company, Sydney Dance Company, and Wayne McGregor Random Dance. During this time, he was twice nominated for Outstanding Performance at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards. His choreographic work has earned him nominations for the 2012 Arts Foundation Fellowship, the 2014 Sky Arts Southbank Awards, and the 2015 Critics’ Circle Awards.
Alexander has built a strong network of collaborators across various art forms, working with filmmakers, designers, digital artists, and composers to create innovative and far-reaching works that expand the scope of dance and deepen the appreciation of movement across the many media in which it finds relevance.
