Tanzplattform Rhein-Main, as a founding member of the Bundesverband Tanz in Schulen e.V., actively promotes the development of standards. The primary goal is to firmly integrate contemporary dance art and culture into school education. The goal is to bring the art form of dance closer to students of all school types and levels in theory and practice, and to make it an integral part of education and personal development. Since the end of 2006, the Dance Platform has been working on its own dance-in-schools concept, which is being continuously developed.
The project periods are flexibly adapted to the possibilities and programs of the schools and selected in coordination with the dance artists*. Generally, a two-hour dance class is held weekly, while other projects are three- to four-hour classes or entire project weeks. The work with a working group extends over a period of at least three months until completion, although work over a school semester is ideal.
The Dance in Schools projects aim to teach the following content in a way that is appropriate for students:
The Dance Platform Rhine-Main focuses on networking and cooperation with representative groups that are directly or indirectly connected with dance in schools. A broad exchange is strived for on different levels, including showing results, direct student exchange, workshops and the organization of performance events of different projects.
The "Dance in Schools Days" offer the opportunity to exchange experiences, results, questions and working methods in dance-in-schools projects. Participants are students, teachers, head teachers and artists who have already gained experience within the framework of the Dance Platform Rhine-Main. The aim is to stimulate communication between all participants and to promote mutual support in collaboration. The format has been expanded and now offers more workshops, exchange, networking and further opportunities to deepen dance competence and cultural understanding as well as to look beyond the canonical horizon of contemporary dance.

Der zeitgenössische Tanz hat in den letzten Jahren eine bemerkenswerte Transformation durchlaufen, geprägt von neuen choreografischen Ansätzen, der Verschmelzung unterschiedlicher Tanzstile und Bewegungsformen sowie einer tiefgreifenden Akzeptanz und Feier der Körperdiversität. In einer Welt, die von Körpernormen geprägt ist, schafft der zeitgenössische Tanz einen Raum für die Einzigartigkeit verschiedener Körper, die jeweils ihre eigenen Geschichten erzählen. Dieser Tanzstil begegnet unterschiedlichen Körperkonzepten im Ballett, im modernen Tanz, in der Improvisation sowie in urbanen Tanzstilen. Die Idee besteht darin, die Vielfalt zu zelebrieren und die unterschiedlichen Körper als Ausdrucksmittel für individuelle Geschichten und Perspektiven zu nutzen. Es wird auch der Blick darauf gerichtet, welche Körperbilder uns prägen und wie sich Körperideale im Laufe der Generationen entwickelt haben. Die Schüler*innen werden ermutigt, gesellschaftliche Normen zu hinterfragen und zu untersuchen, wie diese das Körperbewusstsein beeinflussen und weitergegeben werden.

Schüler*innen erleben auf individueller und geopolitischer Ebene radikale Beschleunigungen. Produkte kommen immer schneller von A nach B. Bilder verbreiten sich nahezu in Echtzeit. Alle Projekte finden mit den „Tanz-in-Schulen-Tagen“ zu Ende des Schuljahres ihren großen Abschluss. Alle beteiligten Schüler*innengruppen treffen sich, um sich auf der Mousonturm Bühne gegenseitig in 15-minütigen Zeitfenstern Ergebnisse ihrer Schuljahresarbeiten zu zeigen. Im Schuljahr 2024/25 soll dieses Präsentationsformat an zwei Tagen stattfinden und mit Begegnungs- und Weiterbildungsformaten für Schüler*innen, Lehrer*innen und Künstler*innen erweitert werden. Die Tanz-in-Schulen-Tage bieten damit, neben dem Aspekt des Austauschs, auch eine Plattform für die Vermittlung neuer Inhalte an alle Projektbeteiligten.

In the school year 23/24, the focus is on transformation. On the one hand, transformation & metamorphosis directly affect the participating young people themselves & on the other hand, they are surrounded by a world of permanent transformation in which they try to fit in. So how can their own personal transformation of body & mind be reconciled with the society in which they live & in which both the young people and society have expectations?
The word transformation is already movement: The reshaping of one state into another. Transformation can be perceived in two ways: by oneself & by observation from outside. We engage with the students in a continuous transformation with the inside & outside environment. How can a small gesture, an action, change an entire room? We accompany the young people in this process, in which we work in an interdisciplinary way - from the use of various materials to somatic practices. The working methods start with perceiving, exploring, practicing, designing, reflecting and understanding, through to presenting.
During the process, we want to make young people aware of how important their attitude and voice are and how they influence their environment.

In the course of the school year, the students should be enabled to express themselves through their own bodies, to deconstruct movement structures & processes of everyday life & to experience dance as a source of creative participation. Especially through the fusion of so-called contemporary dance & forms of so-called urban dance, synergies arising from the different approaches are not only visible, but can also be experienced. At the Bettinaschule, possibilities are explored to deal with aspects of mental health through dance, such as the effects of bullying, experiences of exclusion, excessive demands and pressure to perform. At the Edith-Stein-Schule, the critical potential of dance styles is tested with a view to contemporary social and political processes. In addition to their own physical engagement with dance, the students also attend dance performances twice a school year in order to broaden their view of art forms, to visualize the potential of dance as a stage art and to present a theatrical image beyond the city theaters. Dance mediators and dramaturges accompany the visits by offering introductions and follow-up discussions. In addition to conveying the content, the focus is primarily on the students' impressions, opinions and analyses. The self-reflective examination of pieces enables the pupils to speak more confidently about what they have experienced, to put impressions into words & to experience dance with a more trained eye.

The TPFRM has been working with IGS Herder in Frankfurt for 10 years. This cooperation can be continued in the 2023/24 school year thanks to the first-time funding from the PwC Foundation. Over the course of the school year, a total of 40 pupils in years 7 and 8 will work on dance as an art form once a week in two groups as part of the project, which is part of the compulsory elective subject 'Cultural Practice'. The project is carried out by experienced dance mediators in tandem (a contemporary dancer and a representative of so-called urban dance). The students are introduced to different techniques and new possibilities of movement are explored. An important part of the cooperation with the IGS Herder is also the regular rehearsals in the rooms of the Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm, which is within walking distance, in order to gain insights behind the scenes of an international theater and production house and to break down fears of contact and internal barriers to a cultural institution.
The project comes to a grand finale with the "Dance in Schools Days" at the end of the school year. The two groups from IGS Herder will meet pupils from other dance-in-schools projects from Darmstadt, Wiesbaden and Offenbach to show each other the results of their school year's work in 15-minute time slots on the Mousonturm stage. In the 2023/24 school year, this presentation format will take place over two days for the first time and will be expanded to include meeting and further education formats for pupils, teachers and artists, thus offering a platform for communicating new content to all project participants in addition to the exchange aspect.
WALLSCHULE LANGEN

Wallschule Langen has planned a creative project for its entire school in 2024. All grades (1st-4th grade) will work together over the course of a year under the motto "Tierisch gut tanzen".
In music units, they encounter different instruments and learn songs. In dance units, they work with the music through dance. A final performance with all participants will take place in Langen at the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025. The project is funded by "Kultur macht Stark" and is realised by the music school in Langen in cooperation with the Wallschule Langen, the Orchesterverein Langen and the Tanzplattform Rhein-Main.

Both projects worked on the topic: How much ME is in WE?
Many young people are currently very active politically. Movements like "Fridays for Future", "Black Lives Matter" or "Me Too" are also accompanied mainly by young people. They are demonstrating and expressing their opinions publicly and visibly. At the same time, young people themselves are in a period of personal transformation and change. Inside - both consciously and subconsciously - questions arise such as: What makes me me? Where do I belong? Am I part of this group or what it represents? How much ME is there in the WE? The mixing of outside and inside is hardly represented in any other young art form as strongly as in the genre of poetry slam (Kate Tempest/UK), urban performance dance (Muhammed Kaltuk/CH) or in verbal dance theater (Pina Bausch). Together with the students and teachers we will discuss in dialogue about different signatures of choreographers from the contemporary scene. We will examine them for personal and collective themes, associative images, body forms and similarities in movement language. In practice we will collect performative words, transfer "images" into forms, ascribe movement qualities to them and translate them into movements.

In the school year 2022/23, 7th and 8th grade students of IGS Herder are invited to explore diverse dance expressions based on the concept of "rhythm". The proposed project will particularly focus on interfaces between urban dance techniques and contemporary dance practices. Under the artistic direction of dancers Ewelina Zielonka and Hannah Dewor, the students will work together once a week. The work will take place at the IGS Herder and the Mousonturm. In this way, the courses will come into contact with a professional dance structure and experience themselves as a creative force in various contexts. In several stages, the students will be introduced to the topic of "rhythm" and various dance forms. The young people's own dance knowledge is integrated. In the second step, "rhythm" is then transferred as an analytical tool to other contexts, such as everyday movements, which are then played with again in a choreographic-structuring way. In the course of the year, the students are equipped with more and more dance-choreographic tools and are increasingly encouraged to develop their own movement visions.

Both projects worked on the theme: "BODY-DRESS-CODE" - body and space/body and costumes "Body-Dress-Code" is dedicated to the relationship between clothes, body and perception. 3 classes from two schools investigate how clothing connects or separates us, how it can embody or change an opinion or an identity. The dance work with stage costumes is the starting point and enables the children to approach their everyday life from an artistic distance and to take an unbiased look at everyday clothing and the attributions associated with it. How can we offer a safe, Corona-ready format in schools? In the course of the diverse experiences of the unusual last year, we have learned to teach dance even with distance and restrictions and are able to work with students in both analog and digital formats. In order to create further planning security for all we would like to work with fixed class groups for these projects. If necessary, we can divide the group into two and also work hybrid in this form.

In the school year 2021/22, the students of the project will learn methods of contemporary dance and approach the topic of body images through the motif of superheroes. Through the medium of dance, they will learn to critically reflect on normative ideas of the body and to counter them with their own diverse articulations of the body. Two dance artists will accompany the children and, at the end, develop a space-consuming installation with them. The project will be guided by the question of how wishful thinking about superheroine bodies and the bodies that are actually available can be brought together. Through the themes of "superheroes" and the orientation towards playful formats such as Escape Rooms, the dance work will be linked even more strongly than in previous projects with the extracurricular life worlds of the students.

"Listening to our Body more than telling it what to do" is how Ohad Naharin described his search for new ideas for a dance piece in 2013. The dance in schools project My speaking Body would like to pick up on this and also go on a search with students from a 7th and 6th grade class, following Naharin's language of movement: The starting point is the idea that everything is already there and waiting to be discovered. The goals of this project are to teach the children and young people that the physical experience of dance is valuable in itself and that the transferability of approaches to other learning processes is possible. In order to inspire and motivate the students, an intensive cooperation with the Hessisches Staatsballett takes place, which will rehearse and perform the piece Kamuyot by Ohad Naharin in the season 2020/21. What is special about Kamuyot is that it breaks down the traditional barrier between stage and auditorium and creates a shared experience between dancers and non-dancers. In this way, they will be able to engage in direct exchange with professional dance practitioners about their newly acquired body languages, which they themselves have explored during their time at the school. Accordingly, not only rehearsal and performance visits are planned, but also direct meetings of verbal and possibly also dance exchange with the ballet ensemble.

A different kind of encounter between art and school! With "Dancing Over", the Mousonturm invites two cultural practice courses of the IGS Herder to become residents at the Künstler*innenhaus and to relocate their classes to one of the rehearsal stages. The project aims to activate the artistic self-empowerment of the students by accentuating the physical aspects of dance. The dance artists Ewelina Zielonka and Hannah Dewor will take on the role of mentors. The starting point will be the students' existing body knowledge. The children will first "create" a collection of everyday movements. They will be guided by fellow students who have already gained experience in previous dance projects. They are invited to share their favorite exercises. They help to develop first small choreographies from the collected everyday material. At the end of the project, the students* select the most interesting pieces and curate a dance evening that is presented. "Dancing Over" turns perspectives around. The theater transforms into a school and turns students into choreographers and teachers.

22 students of the 7th IGS Herder year meet on Fridays at 8:15 am to learn how to use movement. As individuals, but also as a group.
During the energetic warm-up we learn to move together, to coordinate body parts with each other, with music and with directions. We observe what it means to focus on movement - what we already know about it and what interests us. Next, we learn about the basics of dance and being together; for example, listening to each other, paying attention to others, and creating movement together in the moment.
As we work on the presentation, we mainly ask ourselves: in what ways can we manifest our "being together" - 22 students at a time? What relationships can we create with each other through movement? What is the reason for our togetherness?

We practice insurrection (AT)
We practice standing up. Stand up, stand up, fall down, stay standing, want to stay sitting, stay lying down, slump, go off and stand in. In the school year 2019/20, the group of students of grade 8 of the IGS Herder, together with the dance artists Hannah Dewor (artistic direction) and Ewelina Zielonka (project support), will deal with the process of standing up. In the process, standing up is illuminated on a physical level as well as on a mental, idealistic level. The group will confront protest mechanisms and will negotiate and exhibit them in choreographic situations. Everyday movement sequences will be taken up and transferred piece by piece into dance movement, alienated and choreographed. During the course of the project and for the final performance, the ideas and (political) concerns of the performing students will be taken up and artistically processed. The following questions play a role: What gets you out of bed in the morning? What is worth getting up for? What is the moment when you make a cause happen, stand up for it and take to the streets?
IGS ALEXEJ VON JAWLENKSY, WIESBADEN

In what is now the 8th project at IGS Alexej von Jawlensky, Jungyeon Kim and Sibylle Magel worked this time with 15 volunteer students of grade 7 on the topic of "thresholds". In the preliminary work, we dealt with the following questions in addition to dance-technical and compositional tools: Which thresholds do we know in everyday life, which important thresholds have there already been in our lives? What feelings do we experience in front of the threshold, on the threshold, behind it? How is this expressed in movement? The students additionally worked on the theme with a material/object: ribbons about 4-5 meters long, with which they repeatedly created new spaces and situations.
The five performances on March 7 and 8, 2019 took place in front of parents, teaching staff and fellow students.

As part of the "Expedition into Contemporary Dance" we ask ourselves the question, what is the difference between the act of movement and the act of dance - how to bridge them? How can we become more sensitive to turn an everyday movement into a dance form? By working with small movement stories in the groups, we observe characteristics of how a form is transferred into a gesture and a gesture into dancing. We play in this area and use new aspects and compositional tools to create relationships with others using aspects of space, musicality, changing movement qualities. Students also learn to move in physical contact with each other.

"How can I still develop a new dance style today?" is the question posed by the Dance in Schools project at the IGS Herder in the 2017/18 school year. In the subject "Cultural Practice," the students devote themselves to this question. Divided into expert groups, each group adopts a favorite style as a starting point. In this way, the group builds up vocabularies of different current dance styles and their possible historical precursors. The special feature: Participants work out any styles from and with Youtube tutorials, spooling up their personal instructor as needed, testing their skills and knowledge. The artist Hannah Dewor accompanies this learning and research process. In the last step, the expert groups dare to compose their own dance style. As a project conclusion, transcripts and own video(tutorial)s of the different styles and new compositions will be presented in addition to live dance performances.
WALLSCHULE FRANKFURT

In the new project "If I were a pirate, I would..." at the Wallschule Frankfurt (school with a special focus on learning), for the first time only boys participate. The dance artist Sandra Baumeister-Roth explores together with the students how the quality of a movement can be changed through fantasy images from the world of pirates. The different possibilities of using space (the room is sometimes transformed into a ship, sometimes into a lonely island) also form a focal point. A performance is to be created with the explored movement material.

Each choroegrafin dedicated herself to a separate focus with two groups each: Hannah Dewor went with the students* into the field of tension of body, space and kit-like objects (sports boxes, etc.) and brought the three components into interaction with each other. Under the title "Ortsverweise" ("References to Place"), Wiebke Dröge and her groups developed movement sequences of concrete everyday situations that take place in rather private places. Jungyeon Kim explored the tension between group and individual together with the students.

For the second time, an introduction to contemporary dance will take place for the 6th grade. The 23 students experiment in 9 double lessons with "just movements - that's not dance! From November 2014 to March 2015, a dance project with the elementary level took place at the Friedrich-von-Bodelschwingh-Schule, a school with a special focus on motor and physical development. The participants were 9 children with very different strengths and limitations, six of the children were mainly dependent on a wheelchair. The results of the project were performed at the Freie Evangelische Gemeinde on March 6, 2015 at 10 a.m. and at the Wiesbaden School Theater Days on March 11, 2015 at the Kleines Haus of the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden as part of an all-class performance by the entire school.

The dance-AG under the direction of Sandra Baumeister at the Wallschule was continued in the second school semester. In the dance workshop, 12 students explored the movement qualities of staccato, i.e. short, interrupted movements, and legato, i.e. connected, flowing movements. With all the researched movement material a choreography was developed and presented in the school as well as in the context of the Dance in Schools Day.
The cooperation with the Wallschule also showed the advantages of several years of collaboration. Many participants have been with the dance group for a long time. Thus, the project leader was able to quickly gain the trust of the students and draw on the experience of the "older" participants. The project was successfully concluded with a presentation.

Since fall 2012, dance-in-schools projects with choreographer and dance teacher Jungyeon Kim and teacher Margret Grätz have been taking place at Freiligrath Elementary School. Twelve 2nd and 3rd grade students worked weekly as part of a voluntarily chosen dance AG. Each class session lasted 90 minutes, during which students learned about rhythmic games, explored movements of different coordinates and dynamics, worked on their kinetic sense through strengthening, stretching, and balancing, and discovered their physical expressiveness through interactive and/or imaginative movement tasks. Students were encouraged to master tasks through repetition and to take on challenges from new and changing movement forms and tasks. In this regard, music, images, props, imagination as well as playful structures provided stimuli during the course of the lessons. In addition, presentation situations were regularly brought about in which the students were encouraged to be confident and disciplined as performers and attentive and encouraging as spectators.
The students in the dance workshop worked primarily physically, thus the workshop gave the students the opportunity to discover and interact with each other. They were given the time they needed to open up to each other. The behavior of the seven and eight year old students showed that they prefer to work with someone who looks and feels like themselves, which led to shyness and reticence in some students. This shows how important it is to convey openness and acceptance through the medium of dance. The project took place in cooperation with Kunst für Kinder e.V..

During the project, the children learned about dance as a language with which they can express themselves and interact with others. The sessions included exercises related to focusing on breathing, stretching, strengthening, balance, and coordination. The students* enjoyed repeating structured exercises and were able to connect them better each time. Anatomical information, visual images of the spine and other bone structures, and guided exploration of their own bodies helped students* get a better feel for their bodies. Since fall 2012, dance-in-schools projects with choreographer and dance teacher Jungyeon Kim and teacher Margret Grätz have been taking place at Freiligrath Elementary School. In this school semester, 8 students from the 2nd to 4th grade dance weekly as part of a voluntary dance club.
In addition to rhythmic play and motor exercises, the focus this semester has been on dance creative exploration with the students. Each individual class focused on a new topic from dance vocabularies - body parts, varying shapes, locomotion, directions, planes, etc. Each topic was approached with a guiding question for the students to follow. Thereupon, the students were further familiarized with the selected topic through instruction in movements and through observation and verbalization.
This exploration process resulted mostly in movement sequences that were independently determined by the students and could be performed in front of the group in an affirmative-supportive atmosphere.

This year, for the first time, a dance-in-schools project took place at Frankfurt's Georg Büchner School (IGS), in which dance teacher Nina Piulats Finger worked with teacher Isabella Galys and a group of 24 students*. The project ran within the subject of physical education of a 9th grade class. Since the project time was limited, the weekly meetings aimed to familiarize the girls with a basic vocabulary of movement and dance and to engage with it. The focus was on a shared exploration of body and space based on a created sequence of movements. The students developed their own dance piece based on various criteria of transformation and reorganization. By adding improvisation tasks, exercises in perception, interaction and group dynamics, the students explored their possibilities and limits.

In the 2013/14 school semester, two projects began simultaneously in two grades 6 classes at the Heinrich Kraft School in Fechenheim. Under the artistic direction of Hannah Dewor and the support of the supervising teacher Christoph Anders, both groups initially worked on the same movement principles and materials. Steps were put together through temporal and spatial variations to form initial compositions and choreographic building blocks. Based on the specifically presented execution and the countless variations of the steps, the students also learned about differences between contemporary and urban movement forms such as street dance.
Improvisational tasks allowed the students to discover their inclinations in terms of movement and their dance skills. Depending on how a group dealt with the offered improvisational and compositional tasks, the further course of the project was different. Thus, the goal of both projects was not only to give the students an insight into different forms of dance and movement, but also to highlight their versatility in dealing with the same tasks, thus demonstrating the character of creative processes. A public or in-school performance was not planned. The project took place in cooperation with Kunst für Kinder e.V..

The dancer and dance teacher Hannah Dewor and the performance artist Marialena Marouda worked together with the teachers Heiner Geerlings and Lothar Höller on a project that took place for the students* as an alternative to the choir lesson. The project aimed to adopt elementary principles of jazz music as leitmotifs for working with movement, body and voice. The students designed choreographic exercises and rhythmic games that allowed them to physically experience the basic building blocks of jazz. The children continued to think about and develop the proposed games themselves. Movement was first introduced into the game as audible movement, as the production of rhythm and music with their own bodies as body percussion. With the help of a warm-up and exercises on space and movement design and with small choreographic building blocks, the students learned basic elements of dance. The introduction of the voice through scatting, rapping, or group voice building exercises was also important. Simple tools were used to create a shared space with a playful framework in which each child could enter and feel comfortable with their own experiences, knowledge, and movement vocabulary.

During the project led by dance pedagogue Ekaterina Steckenborn and an accompanying teacher, students from a DAZ class (German as a second language) were able to benefit from the experiences of the eight participating students from the dance theater class who were involved in the project "Das hat mich umgehauen" (That blew me away) in the 1st half of 2014. With simple exercises and creative impulses, movement material was generated and shaped into a performance. After initial searching and experimenting, the following aspects were used for the performance: perceiving oneself and others, foreign language, space or spaces (schoolyard), children's games (Ochs am Berg), encounters with others, folk dance and hip-hop elements. The joint work not only had an integrative artistic character, but was also characterized by an intercultural exchange, which was profitable for both sides and once again showed that learning together and working creatively are possible even without perfect German skills of all participants.

In what is now the seventh dance-in-schools project at the Wallschule, dance pedagogue Sandra Baumeister once again worked with teacher Daniela Busch.
Spring and the first rays of sunshine that bring nature to awaken served as a movement idea to "wake up" the different parts of the body and to experiment with opening and closing movements. In each lesson, the project leader presented a body part and the students explored it in partner exercises. Afterwards, the movement possibilities of this body part were related to the focus on "opening and closing" and extended through dance exercises. Certain movement sequences were gradually connected to form a dance sequence, which the students then demonstrated. Children who started the project very closed were able to express their movement possibilities more freely at the end.

In September 2014, a dance workshop under the direction of Sandra Baumeister started again at the Wallschule. This time the focus was on working with moving pictures, photos and materials as inspiration for movement. The pictures provided a lot of information about form, dynamics, time and space and thus generated new images in the students, which they could then translate into movement. At the beginning of the lesson, the students talked about the different images and materials used in class and shared their own sensations, impressions and associations. The material shown thus became a new more personal image, the "second look". How do autumn leaves move in the wind, what do I feel, what do I see and how can I dance my new image are questions that were addressed. The different materials inspired the students to experiment with shapes and dynamics and to find new ways of moving.
In the 2019/20 season, the Dance in Schools program of Tanzplattform Rhein-Main is cooperating with the project SCHOOL IS DANCING of the Centre for Choreographic Development SE.S.TA. The aim is to promote exchange between the programs as well as the dance artists involved.

Tanzplattform Rhein-Main took over the coordination in Germany for a seminar organized by SE.S.TA from October 27 to 30, 2019 at the castle Žďár nad Sázavou (CZ). Six artists from the Rhine-Main area worked there together with colleagues from the Czech Republic. Experiences were exchanged and practical work was done on site with a group of children. The aim was to actively involve children in the creative process and to support indirect learning outcomes: the improvement of social skills, teamwork, self-confidence, self-awareness and the improvement of the understanding of contemporary dance. The seminar was led by a lecturer from Germany and a facilitator from the Czech Republic.
