THE KINAESTHETIC BODY

How do movement qualities arrive and take form in our bodies? How do we compose with a kinaesthetic approach? Laura has been building her approach to working with what she calls the ‘kinaesthetic state’ in solo improvisation for the last seven years. Training full body movement, we work towards mapping the body through sensory expansion in specific directions. We challenge our agility and reflexes by layering qualities of movement in relation to gravity and momentum, and question how to compose an irregular use of time and space. These classes are geared towards the professional dancer who is interested in training an articulate solo body and deeper understanding of specificity and technique in working with the unpremeditated impulse. Designed to ready the professional dancer for the day, we train our senses, move our joints, and get sweaty, all while cultivating a sense of aliveness in our bodies.

LAURA HICKS (*Toronto) is a choreographer and dancer based in Frankfurt a.M. Her choreographic practice is an exploration of kinaesthetic states, affects and intensities that are constructed through improvisation. Creating several works as part of the duo Hicks&Bühler, she produced, directed, and performed in the remount of Der Klumpen (Hicks&Bühler/2018) a highly physical work for 5 women for the Tanz Festival Rhein-Main 2022. Making Impressions and Other Failures (Hicks and Reynolds/2018), Dritter Raum (2022), and Gut Symmetries (2022) are also available for tour. She has been a guest teacher for the Dance Theater Heidelberg (AD Ivan Perez) and the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company (AD Ioannis Mandafounis), and holds an MA in Contemporary Dance Education from HfMDK where she is also adjunct faculty.
