Ballet for Contemporary Dancers

This training utilizes ballet technique to access rigor, musicality, movement efficiency and expression. Working within our structures, exercises at the barre tune placement and coordination, build strength and dexterity of the whole system. Center combinations become more complex through rhythmical phrasing, speed and changes of direction culminating in a spacious waltz and a series of jump sequences. The idea is to access tools through the ballet vocabulary that can be applied to other forms of dance and at the same time experience the joy of dancing ballet.

Katelyn Skelley trained at Minnesota Dance Theater, the School of American Ballet and received her BFA in dance from New York University. She later studied a contemporary approach to ballet with Zvi Gotheiner, Christine Wright and Janet Panetta in New York. As a performer she worked with companies and choreographers Kyle Abraham, James Sewell Ballet, Gallim Dance, Katrin Hall, the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern and the Body Cartography Project. In 2020 she completed her MA in Contemporary Dance Education from the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, where she taught ballet and contemporary dance techniques. Currently, Katelyn is the rehearsal director for the dance company at Theater Münster and teaches ballet for contemporary dancers at the Zentrum für Zeitgenössischen Tanz at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
